Description

Sussex has two large gables on its front facade, which helps give this steep-roofed arts and crafts cottage a distinct look. The heavy stone base around the perimeter of the home gives it a solid visual foundation. Sussex gets its name from this distinct limestone that is quarried around the town of Sussex in southeastern Wisconsin.

Entry into this home is via a welcoming covered front entry porch. By cleverly placing the entry on the corner of the home like this, either side of the home can be used as the front. It also make this a good choice for corner lot situations. Sussex has an open first floor plan with a large kitchen that acts as the main hub. Dining, great room, foyer, entry and study, all circle around the kitchen on the outside walls. Decorative wood beams are used to define spaces, rather than using view blocking internal walls. Utility spaces such as the laundry and bathroom act as a connector link to the garage at the back of the home. An airlock style mudroom between the main home and the garage helps with energy efficiency, and seals the garage airtight for the main home. This semi-detached style of garage also allows for easy adaptation to different orientations, lot sizes or lot slopes. A screen porch is tucked into the protected corner formed between the main house and the garage link. This allows the rear of the home to function a private courtyard.

The bedrooms are tucked up under the roof on the second floor with charming windows opening out of the many gables. The master bedroom has a walk-in closet. Bedrooms 2 and 3 are mirror images of one another, and both have their own sitting or study areas. Both the upper and main floors of this home have 9 foot ceilings.
