This petite and discrete timbered frame retreat is long and skinny for two reasons: To bring in light from two sides; and to work within the dicipline of timber frame construction. Inside, the spaces open to each other but are articulated by the timber frame, combining the best of what an open plan has to offer with the added benefit of defined rooms. A stone wall at the entry flows into the massive stone fireplace. An almost hidden, secret staircase wraps around the fireplace, leading to an upper level couple's retreat with vaulted ceiling, library alcove, and large windows overlooking the view.

The couple's bedroom feels like a treehouse, separated from the other bedroom both by level and location at opposite ends of the house. The downstairs bedroom opens onto a small sleeping porch.
