Description

Hillside House is a contemporary Arts and Crafts style home, designed to take advantage of broad rearward views. Each of the main spaces within the house faces a view, making a strong connection between the interior and the landscape outside. The octagonal central volume of this home acts like an architectural hinge in the design, and this same shape creates a spectacular tower room in the upper level.

Although Hillside House is designed with both a basement and an upper level tower, it functions like a single level home. All three bedrooms and all daily living areas are on the main level. The upper level is reserved for a study or retreat area, and the lower level is designed so that it need not be built unless it is desired.

Entry into this spacious design is through a covered front porch and into a wood floored foyer. Directly opposite the entry, across the sunken living room, is a large line of view windows. Healthy natural light floods the living room, and draws you into the heart of the home. A stone fireplace visually anchors this large living room with its rich wood cathedral ceiling. To one side of the living room is the home's master suite, also with cathedral ceilings and its own private deck. To the other side is the central octagonal kitchen and dining room. The non-standard shape of both the dining and kitchen areas, give this part of the home a comfortable, cozy, yet still elegant feel. Large windows overlook the rear deck and views beyond.

Past the kitchen are the home's other two bedrooms. They share a full bath, and are located conveniently near the laundry. Corner windows placed directly opposite their doors, make these already good-sized bedrooms feel larger than they really are.

The upper level of the home is an octagonal viewing tower. This space is secluded from the rest of the home, making it an excellent study, home office, or art studio.

The lower level of the home was originally built as a daylight basement. Its conditioned space contains a large family room, half bath, large mechanical room, and abundant storage. Also on this level (and not included in the square footage totals) is the home's garage. This area is easily converted to basement storage or heated space if the slope of the lot does not allow for garage access.
