Climate Descriptions

In order to assist you in choosing a home that is well suited for your region, we have provided the following descriptions of climate zones. Please identify your climate zone (listed below), and discuss any necessary modifications with your builder if you chose to construct your home in an area that differs from the climate it was originally designed for.

    Cold
A region where temperatures drop below 32 degrees and snow accumulates.

    Mixed-Humid
A region where temperatures drop below 45 degrees and more than 20” of rain falls during winter months.

    Hot-Humid
A region where average monthly temperatures stay above 45 degrees throughout the year and more than 20” of rain falls annually.

    Mixed-Dry
A region where average monthly temperatures drop below 45 degrees during winter months and less than 20” of rain falls annually.

    Hot-Dry
A region where average monthly temperatures stay above 45 degrees throughout the year and less than 20” of rain falls annually.

For further information about building techniques appropriate to your climate, we recommend the “Builder’s Guide” series by Joseph Lstiburek made available through the Energy and Environmental Building Association.
